It’s cherry season here in California and roadside stands are popping up left and right.
Although you may know mimosas made with orange juice, you can make it with any fruit juice you would like, as well as other alcohols added into the mix.
I was recently focusing on the first unit of math which for my fifth graders is a review of fourth grade fraction concepts. These include adding fractions with like and unlike denominators. It’s no wonder the word problem type taught with these concepts are ADD TO word problems.
As I was researching and thinking about how to best teach my students, I knew from discussions with other teachers in my district (first grade teachers especially) that ADD TO word problems are tricky for students. That’s why I broke ADD to word problems down for you here, but not without making the content relevant to my audience (teachers).
Not all teachers drink, but there is something to be said for Fridays after school and teacher happy hours. So, as you learn more about add to word problems, don’t forget to mix up your own favorite mimosa recipe using the three main ingredients: dry sparkling wine (or Prosecco or Champagne), fruit juice, and fresh fruit to garnish.
Add a splash of math, and you have your self a Mathmosa! Try these delicious Tart Cherry Mathmosas during those last weeks of school in May and June when cherries are in season.
Ingredients:
3 oz Prosecco
3 oz Cherry juice
Fresh cherries, pitted and chopped for garnish
How To:
Pour the Prosecco first. Depending on how strong you want your drink, you can do ½ sparkling wine and half fruit juice, or 2:1 ratio of alcohol to juice.
Next, add the cherry juice. Don’t stir to mix as this flattens the bubbly.
Garnish with pitted and chopped cherries.
